Objectives: The purpose of this study was to measure the amount of fluoride inadvertently swallowed by preschool children during toothbrushing using HMDS (Hexamethyl Disi1oxane)-facilitated modified diffusion method.
Methods: A total of 173 preschool children aged 4-7 years participated in the study from 4 different kindergartens in Gwangju and Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. Fluoride ingestion was measured as the difference between the quantity of fluoride used at each brushing and spilt out. A amount of fluoride was estimated based on the quantity of toothpaste and content of toothpaste fluoride. The amount of fluoride ingested was divided by weight to calculate fluoride intake per lulogram of body weight and daily toothbrushing frequency was multiply.
Results: The quantity of toothpaste used at each bmshing was 0.49 1k0.27 g on average. An average of
0.24f 0.01 mg of fluoride was ingested with each brush by children. The ratio of fluoride intake to the
amount used at each brushing was 47.8+ 18.9%. The daily intake of fluoride was 0.027i0.021 mg/kg
body weight.
Conclusion: Dental health education for young children should therefore emphasize the use of small amount of toothbrush and how to spit out toothpaste and rinse their mouth thoroughly.
